Often overlooked in the evolutionary process of what would come to be known as neo-classical heavy metal, Sweden’s Silver Mountain is one of the great Scandinavian cult bands of the 1980s. Named for the famous song by Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Silver Mountain was first assembled in 1978 by vocalist/guitarist Jonas Hansson, guitarist Morgan Alm, bassist Ingemar Stenquist and drummer Marten Hedener; but this lineup would be short-lived, splintering after releasing just one unsuccessful single called ‘Man Of No Present Existence’ the next year. With a new improved line-up and a record deal Silver Mountain started to make impact in their homeland all the way up to ’85 before the Johansson brothers were snatched up by guitar god Yngwie J. Malmsteen and his Rising Force counterpart. Silver mountain was pretty much the staple that got these guys on the map as well as gitarist Jonas Hansson and bassist Per Stadin. ‘Breakin Chains’ is an album most fans have been waiting for. It features 13 previously unreleased tracks. They were recorded way back then but never released and stored in a vault. The guys took these songs and just basically did them live in the studio as a band; all original members and yaking advantage of the technological differences nowadays and still capture that authentic old sound they had back then. I hear hints of Deep Purple, Rainbow and it has a NWOBHM vibe despite that era was just getting underway when the band was active. First class Swedish metal.
